Just as with WordPress themes, you need to be careful about using free Blogger templates found on the web. These can also include malware or spam links to other sites. Unfortunately, unlike WordPress, Google has no official site to distribute Blogger templates separate from their Template Designer, so there is no 100 percent safe source for trustworthy themes.

If you see links included in the template that you wouldn’t want on your blog, be sure to either remove them or use a different template.

Here’s how to install a Blogger template you’ve downloaded from another site:
  1. Log in to Blogger, and on your Blogger Dashboard, click the Design link.
  2. Click the Edit HTML tab.
  3. Click the Download Full Template link and save it to your computer.
    Make a note of the file name and where you saved it in case you need it later!
  4. Unzip the template file you downloaded from another site.
  5. Back on the Edit HTML page, click the Choose File button.
  6. Navigate to where you saved the unzipped files on your computer, and double-click the one that ends in .xml.
  7. Click the Upload button.
    If you already have some existing widgets on your Blogger blog, you may get a warning message asking whether you want to keep them or delete them. If you want to preserve the work you’ve done before, click the Keep Widgets button. If you don’t need them anymore, click the Delete Widgets button.
    When the upload is complete, you get a message at the top of the page that says Your Changes Have Been Saved.
  8. Click the View Blog button to ensure that your blog looks the way you want it to look.
    You may have to remove or move some page elements in order to get the template to display properly.

Blog Templates Design

Some free Blogger templates you find on the web may be incompatible with the most recent version of Blogger. If this happens to you, you’ll either have to find someone very smart who knows how to edit XML, or you’ll have to find a different template to upload! You can also reinstall the template you downloaded as a backup, or use the Template Designer.

Backlinks from other sites to your web pages can be an important element in search engine optimisation. Links from popular sites covering related content can be particularly effective, both in improving your search engine rankings and generating direct traffic.

So how do you go about link building? Here are a dozen quick tips to get you started.
  1. Write great content. Other people are far more likely to link to your website if it offers great content, particularly if that content is unique.
  2. Think about the types of content that people really like linking to - for example, a 'top ten' document, a page with a really striking image, a poll or a contest.
  3. Regularly add new and updated content, and publicise it both online and offline.
  4. Get involved in online forums relating to your industry. Take advantage of opportunities to post useful comments that demonstrate your expertise (and provide a link to any relevant content on your site).
  5. Submit your site to free directories - the Open Directory, trade directories for your industry and local directories.
  6. Make sure your website is listed in the members' directories of any trade associations you belong to.
  7. Ask business partners to link to you. Would suppliers like to list you as a client or use your business for a case study? Would customers recommend you?
  8. Use social media - write a blog, comment on other industry blogs, or get involved in relevant discussions on social networking sites.
  9. Use a link checker tool to see which sites are already linking to your website. Try to identify what you did that prompted them to do this, and do some more of it.
  10. Check out your competitors' websites and use a link checker tool to find out which sites link to them as well. Are these an opportunity for you too?
  11. Focus on quality, not quantity. A link from a relevant, authoritative site does more for your search engine rankings than ten links from random websites.
  12. Be consistent, aiming to build links gradually over time. A sudden burst of link building can be counterproductive, making search engines think you're up to no good.

Blogger, is a platform that will host the site for you for free. Much like Word Press, just that  Blogger is owned by Google.
Clearly this means that you should not forget about Blogger when you’re thinking about your strategy to increase your blog’s page rank.
Blogger offers this cool feature that allows you to keep track of your backlinks. So if you’re considering creating a blog with this CMS, then you should really follow these tips that I will present to you.
BUT first, let’s take it one step at a time.

What are Blogger backlinks ?

A very simple answer would be:
blogger backlinks are other blogs that link to your post, or page”.

How do Blogger backlinks work?

Let’s take an example. For instance you will write something on your blog about how to take care of your pets, with details about brushing, washing feeding and so on.
A reader will come to you page, let’s say in this case me, and I will consider your suggestions about taking care of pets very interesting. SO, I had out to my own Blogger blog and I write something about this topic too, BUT I link to the original post, in this case YOUR post.
When that happens, your blog will automatically show that I linked to it, and it will also give a snippet of my text and a link to my post.
Some sort of: “I scratch your back, You scratch my back”.  The idea behind it, is to unite sites that are related to eachother, that they talk about the same topic. It makes sense in a way, doesn’t it?

How to use Blogger backlinks?

The default template that Blogger uses already has set up the necessary step for creating blog backlinks. BUT, in case you may want to personalize your blog, and choose a different template, then you should use put this special “blogger code”.
Once you have it set it up, you will see “Links to this post” next to the comment link of each of your blog posts:
If you click it, you will end up on a new page where you will be able to see all the blogger backlinks to that specific post:
If you tried this option, and you think it’s not suited for you, then you can easily turn it off. It’s very simple, all you have to do is go and edit the desired post you want to turn off the backlinks for and choose “no”:

Navigation Bar = List of Links

A navigation bar needs standard HTML as a base.
In our examples we will build the navigation bar from a standard HTML list.
A navigation bar is basically a list of links, so using the <ul> and <li> elements makes perfect sense:

Example

<ul>
<li><a href="default.asp">Home</a></li>
<li><a href="news.asp">News</a></li>
<li><a href="contact.asp">Contact</a></li>
<li><a href="about.asp">About</a></li>
</ul>

Try it yourself »
Now let's remove the bullets and the margins and padding from the list:

Example

ul
{
list-style-type:none;
margin:0;
padding:0;
}

Try it yourself »
Example explained:
  • list-style-type:none - Removes the bullets. A navigation bar does not need list markers
  • Setting margins and padding to 0 to remove browser default settings
The code in the example above is the standard code used in both vertical, and horizontal navigation bars.

Vertical Navigation Bar

To build a vertical navigation bar we only need to style the <a> elements, in addition to the code above:

Example

a
{
display:block;
width:60px;
}

Try it yourself »
Example explained:
  • display:block - Displaying the links as block elements makes the whole link area clickable (not just the text), and it allows us to specify the width
  • width:60px - Block elements take up the full width available by default. We want to specify a 60 px width
